What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy weaves together traditional talk therapy with body-based approaches. Instead of focusing only on your thoughts or stories about an experience, we pay close attention to how your body holds that experience.

Through slow, mindful attention to sensations - things like tightness, heat, numbness, or a surge of energy - somatic therapy helps you build awareness, release what’s stuck, and reconnect to yourself more deeply.

This isn’t about “fixing” you, it’s about honoring the incredible ways your body adapted to survive, and giving it the space and support it needs to heal.

How Trauma Impacts the Body

When something overwhelming happens, our bodies react instinctively, trying to protect us through fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses.
Sometimes, though, those survival energies get trapped because we weren’t able to fully respond in the moment. That’s why trauma can show up later as chronic stress, hypervigilance, dissociation, or physical pain.

Somatic therapy helps you:

  • Recognize the ways your body communicates with you

  • Gently process and release survival energy that’s been held inside

  • Build a greater sense of grounding, safety, and choice

It’s not about reliving the trauma, it’s about helping your body complete what it didn’t get to finish, at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

In a somatic therapy session, we might:

  • Notice what’s happening in your body as you talk

  • Explore small movements, grounding techniques, or breathwork

  • Work with images, memories, or emotions through the lens of body awareness

  • Build up resources (exercises, places, memories, or images that feel safe or supportive)
